The Efficacy of Life Skill Training for Parents of Mentally Retarded Students with Behavioral Disorders

Introduction: Two key factors, child’s mood and behavior characteristics of parents, plays a fundamental role in creation of behavioral problems in childhood and its persistence.
Goal: The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of life skills training to parents of mentally retarded children.
Methodology: The method was quasi-experimental and research design was pretest-post test control group.120 mentally retarded students from Arbabi School in Karaj were assessed using the Rutter behavior problems test, that 50 of them had behavioral problems more than normal. The parents of 40 of them accepted to cooperate who were randomly assigned in experimental in experimental group was trained in life skills.(both groups were assessed with pretest). At the end of the training program they were assessed in post test. In order to analyze the data, descriptive statistics and analysis of covariance was used.
Result: Results indicated a significant difference (p<0/05) between the control experimental group.
Conclusion: Life skills training for parents of mentally retarded children are effective in behavioral disturbances.
